The bat, the emblem of lunar day 9

Lunar day 9: the bat

Lunar day 9 is a misty day: fears speak louder than facts, and the gift is bringing a fear into the light and naming it, not deciding from inside it.

The character of lunar day 9

The bat flies at dusk and finds its way by echo rather than sight, and the ninth lunar day is traditionally counted among the harder days of the month for that reason: the view is murky, and old fears, suspicions and illusions surface easily. The tradition warns of it but does not call it simply bad: it reads it as a day of seeing what frightens us — the things that steer decisions from out of sight. The Moon is waxing past the first quarter, gaining light; the work of the day is to let some of that light fall on what has been avoided.

What the day favors

The day favors writing fears down, talking them over with someone steady, and checking an anxious story against the facts. It suits cleansing in the plain sense — a long bath, a cleared desk, an aired room — and quiet routine work that does not depend on the mood. Seeing a fear in the light and naming it is the gift of the bat.

What can wait

What can wait is deciding out of murky water. Signing, quitting, confronting or committing while suspicion is loud are the shadow of the ninth day, and so is feeding a worry with more reading about it. Important choices sit better a day later, once the mist has thinned.

With other people

With other people, the ninth day asks for patience with suspicion — your own and others'. Misunderstandings grow easily in the mist, so it helps to check before concluding and to ask before accusing. A trusted friend who can say “that sounds like fear talking” is worth more than a crowd of opinions today.

The question of the day

The day asks which fear has been making your decisions lately — and what it looks like written down in daylight.

When lunar day 9 falls

The dates in this table count lunar days (also called moon days) from the exact new moon, the same moment everywhere: day one is the first twenty-four hours after it — a table read anywhere cannot follow one horizon. The line at the top of the page counts the traditional way, from moonrise where you are, which can be up to a day apart. How the lunar day is counted
