Numerology is the old practice of finding meaning in numbers — above all, the numbers hidden in a date of birth and a name. The version on these pages is the Pythagorean one that most Western numerologists use: every letter is given a digit from 1 to 9, every date and name is reduced to one of those digits or to one of three master numbers, 11, 22 and 33, and each of those twelve numbers has a character of its own.

The calculator on this page finds the first and best known of a chart's numbers, the Life Path number, from a date of birth alone. Each number then has a page of its own: what it means as a life path, as an Expression, Soul Urge, Personality or Birthday number, in love and in work, and what it asks of you. None of it tells the future. Numbers are a way of looking at a life, for reflection and entertainment rather than prediction.

How to calculate your Life Path number

Write the date of birth as a day, a month and a year, and reduce each of the three on its own by adding its digits until a single digit is left. The year is summed first and then reduced: 1990 gives 1 + 9 + 9 + 0 = 19, then 1 + 9 = 10, then 1. There is one exception: when a reduction reaches 11, 22 or 33, it stops there. Finally, add the three results together and reduce the total in the same way.

Take May 14, 1990. The day, 14, becomes 1 + 4 = 5. The month, May, is 5. The year becomes 1. The total is 5 + 5 + 1 = 11 — a master number, so it stays 11.

Why Life Path calculators disagree

Some numerologists add every digit of the date at once instead. The two methods usually agree, but not always: December 20, 1999, gives 33 when all eight digits are added together, and 6 when the day, the month and the year are reduced first (2 + 3 + 1). This calculator and the Vanteia app reduce the day, the month and the year first, so a master number is kept only when those three parts themselves add up to it. The difference runs both ways — April 22, 1960, is a 33 by its parts and a 6 by all its digits — so two calculators can honestly disagree about the same date.

The five core numbers

The Life Path is one of five numbers that numerology calls the core of a chart. The Birthday number is simply the day of the month, reduced on its own: a gift brought along, a talent in its raw form. The other three come from the full name given at birth, with every letter worth a digit — in the Latin alphabet, A, J and S are 1; B, K and T are 2; and so on, up to I and R, which are 9; names written in Cyrillic are counted on tables of their own. An accented letter counts as the letter under the accent: é as E, ã as A, ç as C, ñ as N. The Expression number, which many English-language books also call the Destiny number, adds all the letters, each part of the name reduced on its own first, and describes what a person is built to do. The Soul Urge, also called the Heart's Desire, adds only the vowels (A, E, I, O and U) and describes what the heart reaches for when no one is watching. The Personality number adds the consonants and describes the first impression others actually meet.

The same number reads differently in each position — a Seven as a life path is a road of questions, a Seven as a personality is a reserved manner — which is why each number's page reads it through every position it can hold. The Vanteia app works out the whole chart from a name and a date, and shows every step of the arithmetic.

Is the Destiny number the same as the Life Path?

Not on these pages, and not in most English-language numerology, where «Destiny» is another name for the Expression number worked out from the full name. Some books — and many numerologists writing in other languages — give the name to the birth-date number instead, the one these pages call the Life Path. The arithmetic tells you which is meant: a date gives the Life Path, the letters of a name give the Expression.

Master numbers: 11, 22 and 33

Three two-digit numbers are kept whole rather than reduced, because the tradition reads them as more than the sum of their digits. Eleven is the number of intuition and inspiration, Twenty-two the master builder, Thirty-three the master teacher. They are not higher ranks. Numerology describes them as larger capacities that come with a matching tension, and each also lives as the digit it would reduce to: 11 as a Two, 22 as a Four, 33 as a Six.

As a life path, 22 and 33 are uncommon — each appears only when the three reduced parts of a date add up to exactly that number — while 11, which four different sums can reach, turns up more often than a Two. And 33 can never be a Birthday number, since no month has a thirty-third day.
