Planets in the signs: what each placement means in a natal chart

The Sun, the Moon and Venus in each of the twelve signs: what each placement in a natal chart means in love, at work and in its shadow.

A natal chart places every planet in one of the twelve signs at the moment of birth. The tradition reads each planet as a force — the Sun as identity and vitality, the Moon as feeling and need, Venus as love, taste and what a person values — and each sign as the medium that force speaks through. The same force sounds different in a different medium: Venus in Taurus savours, Venus in Gemini converses, Venus in Scorpio goes to the bottom of things.

These pages read the Sun, the Moon and Venus in each of the twelve signs: the gift first, then the shadow, then how a person with the placement might work with it. They are the astrological tradition’s reading, offered for reflection rather than prediction.

What a planet in a sign means

A sign colours a planet; it never decides for it. The tradition gives some planets a sign where they feel at home — their rulership — and a sign where they are especially honoured, their exaltation. Opposite those lie the signs where the planet works in an unfamiliar medium, detriment and fall. Such a placement is not weaker: what comes easily elsewhere is learned here, and what is learned is often held more consciously.

No single placement describes a whole person. The Sun, the Moon and Venus each speak to one part of a life, and in a real chart they are read together, with the houses and the aspects between the planets.

The Sun, the Moon and Venus

The Sun sign is the one most people know — the sign of the season of birth, the core of identity and what a person shines through. The Moon sign moves every two and a half days and speaks to the inner life: what soothes, what a person needs to feel safe, how feelings arrive and settle. Venus speaks to love, attraction, pleasure and taste, and to what a person values, money included.

Two people with the same Sun sign can feel very different, and the Moon and Venus are often where the difference lies. Which of the three in your chart do you recognise most, and which least?

Finding your own placements

The Sun sign needs only the date of birth. The Moon changes sign every two to three days, and on the day it changes, the time of birth decides which sign it is in; Venus stays in a sign for about a month. In the Vanteia app, the natal chart is calculated from your date, time and place of birth, places every planet in its sign and house, and lets you ask about any of them in your own words.
