Year of the Dog: Chinese zodiac meaning, years and the five elements
The Dog is the eleventh of the twelve animals: loyal, fair and protective, the one who keeps its promises. Here is what the tradition reads in it, its years, and its five elements.

Character
The Dog is the guardian of the house in Chinese tradition, and the sign keeps that role. People born in a Dog year are read as loyal, honest and fair-minded, the friends who stay when it matters and the colleagues who speak up when something is wrong.
The Dog belongs to the branch 戌, yang earth, late autumn, when the harvest is in and the house is closed against the cold. Its earth holds metal and fire within it, so the tradition reads the Dog as steady with a strong sense of justice and a warm heart. It is protective of its own and suspicious of pretence. Its shadow, in the same reading, is anxiety and a quickness to suspect when trust has been shaken, and a habit of carrying other people's burdens out of duty.
In love
In love the Dog is read as faithful, sincere and devoted, a partner who stays through difficulty. It values honesty above romance. What asks for care is worry: the Dog may imagine the worst and need more reassurance than it asks for. The tradition reads the Dog's happiest bonds as those where loyalty is returned and doubts are said aloud.
At work
At work the tradition gives the Dog reliability, integrity and a sense of service — law, education, social work, healthcare, security, any field that rewards fairness and dedication. It is the conscience of a team. The caution is about overwork and about pessimism when a project goes badly.
Harmonies and clashes
The tradition places the Dog in a six harmony with the Rabbit and in the three harmony of fire with the Tiger and the Horse. Its clash is with the Dragon, opposite it in the circle: vigilance meeting vision. The Rooster is its harm, and the Dog belongs with the Ox and the Goat to the three-way punishment (丑戌未). These are patterns of weather, never a decision about people.
