Year of the Tiger: Chinese zodiac meaning, years and the five elements

The Tiger is the third of the twelve animals: brave, magnetic and generous, the one who starts what others hesitate over. Here is what the tradition reads in it, its years, and its five elements.

Years: 1902, 1914, 1926, 1938, 1950, 1962, 1974, 1986, 1998, 2010, 2022, 2034

Character

The Tiger is the king of the mountain in Chinese lore, the guardian painted on gates to keep misfortune away, and the tradition gives its people the same presence. Those born in a Tiger year are read as courageous, warm and idealistic: quick to defend the weak, quick to begin, and hard to ignore when they walk into a room.

The Tiger belongs to the branch 寅, yang wood, the opening of spring when the year's growth begins — the month that starts at Lichun, the beginning of spring. Wood gives the Tiger its upward drive and its sense of justice; hidden inside it are fire and earth, enthusiasm and a need for solid ground. The tradition admires the Tiger's boldness and generosity. Its shadow is impulsiveness: acting before the ground is checked, and an impatience with limits that can turn a brave start into an unfinished one.

In love

In love the Tiger is read as passionate, devoted and protective, a partner who brings adventure and expects honesty in return. It loves openly and can be very romantic. What asks for care is the Tiger's need for freedom and its pride: it may struggle to say it was wrong, or to let a partner lead. The tradition reads the Tiger's happiest bonds as those where both people have room to roam and choose to come home.

At work

At work the tradition gives the Tiger leadership, initiative and the courage to take risks — entrepreneurship, advocacy, exploration, the arts, any role that rewards a bold first step. It inspires others easily. The caution is about follow-through and about authority: a Tiger may chafe under a manager it does not respect, or lose interest once the challenge is gone.

Harmonies and clashes

The tradition places the Tiger in a six harmony with the Pig and in the three harmony of fire with the Horse and the Dog. Its clash is with the Monkey, opposite it in the circle: courage meeting cleverness. The Snake is its harm, and the Tiger, the Snake and the Monkey form the three-way punishment (寅巳申) the tradition reads as a pattern of ingratitude to watch for. The tradition notices these pulls; it never decides with them who belongs together.
