Year of the Snake: Chinese zodiac meaning, years and the five elements
The Snake is the sixth of the twelve animals: wise, intuitive and elegant, the one who thinks long before it moves. Here is what the tradition reads in it, its years, and its five elements.
Years: 1905, 1917, 1929, 1941, 1953, 1965, 1977, 1989, 2001, 2013, 2025, 2037
Character
The tradition calls the Snake the little dragon and gives it a quiet, deep intelligence. People born in a Snake year are read as perceptive, composed and refined — thinkers who watch, understand, and then act decisively, often after everyone else has stopped paying attention.
The Snake belongs to the branch 巳, yin fire, early summer, when warmth gathers but has not yet peaked. Its fire is inward: insight rather than display. Hidden within it are earth and metal, so the tradition reads the Snake as both intuitive and practical, with a sense of style and a sense of value. It is loyal to the few it trusts and keeps its own counsel. Its shadow, in the same reading, is secrecy, a long memory for a slight, and a tendency to hold on to what it would be lighter to let go.
In love
In love the Snake is read as devoted, sensual and deeply loyal, a partner who chooses carefully and stays. It shows love with attention and thoughtful gestures. What asks for care is possessiveness and reserve: a Snake may feel more than it says and expect to be understood without words. The tradition suggests its bonds grow lighter when it trusts a partner with what it is really thinking.
At work
At work the tradition gives the Snake strategy, research and judgement — analysis, science, law, finance, psychology, the arts, any field that rewards depth and discretion. It plans well and acts at the right moment. The caution is about overthinking and about working alone: the Snake may keep its plans so private that allies cannot help.
Harmonies and clashes
The tradition places the Snake in a six harmony with the Monkey and in the three harmony of metal with the Rooster and the Ox. Its clash is with the Pig, opposite it in the circle: reserve meeting openness. The Tiger is its harm, and the Snake belongs with the Tiger and the Monkey to the three-way punishment (寅巳申). The tradition describes these as pulls in the weather between two people, not as a verdict.
