Year of the Ox: Chinese zodiac meaning, years and the five elements
The Ox is the second of the twelve animals: patient, dependable and strong, the one who carries a task to its end. Here is what the tradition reads in it, its years, and its five elements.
Years: 1901, 1913, 1925, 1937, 1949, 1961, 1973, 1985, 1997, 2009, 2021, 2033
Character
The Ox finished second in the great race, carrying the Rat on its back the whole way, and the tradition keeps that picture: strength that is generous, steady and not in a hurry. People born in an Ox year are read as dependable, methodical and honest, the ones who finish what they start and keep their word without making a show of it.
The Ox belongs to the branch 丑, yin earth, the coldest part of winter, when the ground is frozen but the seed is safe inside it. Its earth holds a little water and a little metal — patience, a deep reserve and a firm sense of what is right. The tradition admires the Ox's endurance and its calm in a crisis. Its shadow is the same steadiness turned stiff: a reluctance to change course once a road has been chosen, and a way of carrying burdens silently until they become too heavy.
In love
In love the Ox is read as faithful, protective and slow to commit — and then deeply committed. It shows care through deeds more than words: a meal made, a repair done, a promise kept. What asks for attention is expression; a partner may long to hear what the Ox already shows. The tradition suggests that the Ox's relationships grow when its quiet devotion is matched by an occasional spoken word of feeling.
At work
At work the tradition gives the Ox reliability, thoroughness and the patience for long projects — agriculture, engineering, finance, crafts, any field where steady effort compounds. It is a trusted pair of hands and often the backbone of a team. The caution is about rigidity: holding to the method that worked last year when the situation has moved on, or taking on more than its share without saying so.
Harmonies and clashes
The tradition places the Ox in a six harmony with the Rat and in the three harmony of metal with the Snake and the Rooster. Its clash is with the Goat, opposite it in the circle: firmness meeting softness. The Horse is its harm, and the Ox belongs with the Dog and the Goat to the three-way punishment (丑戌未) the tradition reads as a habit of pressing one's advantage. These are tendencies the tradition notices, never a verdict about two people.
