Year of the Horse: Chinese zodiac meaning, years and the five elements

The Horse is the seventh of the twelve animals: free-spirited, warm and energetic, the one who is happiest in motion. Here is what the tradition reads in it, its years, and its five elements.

Years: 1906, 1918, 1930, 1942, 1954, 1966, 1978, 1990, 2002, 2014, 2026, 2038

Character

The Horse stands at the top of the circle, at noon and midsummer, and the tradition gives it the sun's own energy. People born in a Horse year are read as lively, independent and open-hearted: quick to laugh, quick to move, and at their best with a horizon in front of them.

The Horse belongs to the branch 午, yang fire, the brightest point of the year. Its fire is warm and sociable, and within it lies a little earth, so the tradition reads the Horse as both spirited and hard-working once it is committed. It loves freedom, travel and good company, and it speaks its mind. Its shadow, in the same reading, is restlessness: leaving before something is finished, and an impatience that can make others feel left behind.

In love

In love the Horse is read as passionate, warm and generous, a partner who brings energy and spontaneity. It falls quickly and loves openly. What asks for care is the Horse's need for space: a relationship that feels like a fence can make it bolt. The tradition reads the Horse's happiest bonds as those built on shared adventures and trust, where freedom is given rather than taken.

At work

At work the tradition gives the Horse energy, communication and adaptability — sales, travel, media, performance, sport, any field that rewards enthusiasm and movement. It learns fast and inspires a team. The caution is about routine and focus: the Horse may lose interest in a long project once the novelty wears off.

Harmonies and clashes

The tradition places the Horse in a six harmony with the Goat and in the three harmony of fire with the Tiger and the Dog. Its clash is with the Rat, opposite it in the circle: fire meeting water, noon meeting midnight. The Ox is its harm, and the Horse is one of the four signs the tradition says punishes itself. The year of one's own animal — for the Horse, 2026 — the tradition calls a year face to face with Tai Sui. These are traditions to know, never verdicts.

The five elements of this sign
