Year of the Goat: Chinese zodiac meaning, years and the five elements

The Goat — also called the Sheep or the Ram — is the eighth of the twelve animals: gentle, artistic and kind, the one who makes a home beautiful. Here is what the tradition reads in it, its years, and its five elements.

Years: 1907, 1919, 1931, 1943, 1955, 1967, 1979, 1991, 2003, 2015, 2027, 2039

Character

The Goat is one character, 未, translated three ways — Goat, Sheep, Ram — and the tradition gives it one temperament: gentle, creative and caring. People born in a Goat year are read as artistic, patient and sensitive, attached to home and to the people they trust, and more at ease in harmony than in competition.

The Goat belongs to the branch 未, yin earth, late summer, when the harvest begins to ripen. Its earth holds a little fire and a little wood, so the tradition reads the Goat as warm and growing as well as steady. It loves beauty, craft and hospitality. Its shadow, in the same reading, is worry, and a kindness that sometimes avoids the hard conversation it most needs.

In love

In love the Goat is read as tender, devoted and romantic, a partner who notices small things and makes a home feel safe. It gives a great deal. What asks for care is the Goat's sensitivity: it may take a careless word to heart, or wait for a partner to guess what it needs. The tradition reads the Goat's best bonds as those where it feels free to ask.

At work

At work the tradition gives the Goat creativity, taste and cooperation — the arts, design, crafts, care work, teaching, any field that rewards imagination and a gentle touch. It works well in a kind team. The caution is about confidence: the Goat may underrate its own work or let someone more forceful decide for it.

Harmonies and clashes

The tradition places the Goat in a six harmony with the Horse and in the three harmony of wood with the Rabbit and the Pig. Its clash is with the Ox, opposite it in the circle: softness meeting firmness. The Rat is its harm, and the Goat belongs with the Ox and the Dog to the three-way punishment (丑戌未). In 2027, the Year of the Fire Goat, the Goat meets its own year — the tradition's 本命年. None of this decides anything; it is weather the tradition names.
