Year of the Dragon: Chinese zodiac meaning, years and the five elements
The Dragon is the fifth of the twelve animals and the only mythical one: confident, visionary and energetic, the one who aims high. Here is what the tradition reads in it, its years, and its five elements.
Years: 1904, 1916, 1928, 1940, 1952, 1964, 1976, 1988, 2000, 2012, 2024, 2036
Character
The Dragon is the most celebrated sign of the Chinese zodiac — the bringer of rain, the emblem of emperors, the one creature in the cycle that exists only in story. The tradition reads its people as confident, ambitious and full of vitality: natural leaders with large plans and the energy to chase them.
The Dragon belongs to the branch 辰, yang earth, late spring, when rains arrive and the fields are made ready. Its earth stores water and wood within it, so the tradition sees the Dragon as a reservoir of potential — vision with the means to grow it. It is generous, enthusiastic and often lucky in how it is remembered. Its shadow is pride: expecting the world to keep pace, and a difficulty admitting a mistake or asking for help.
In love
In love the Dragon is read as passionate, generous and loyal, a partner who brings excitement and wants to be admired. It loves boldly. What asks for care is the Dragon's independence and its high expectations: a partner can feel they are always being measured against an ideal. The tradition reads the Dragon's best bonds as those where it lets itself be cared for as well as caring.
At work
At work the tradition gives the Dragon vision, charisma and drive — leadership, entrepreneurship, the arts, public life, any field that rewards ambition and the ability to inspire. It thinks big and works hard. The caution is about delegation and detail: a Dragon may push ahead before a plan is sound, or find it hard to share the stage.
Harmonies and clashes
The tradition places the Dragon in a six harmony with the Rooster and in the three harmony of water with the Rat and the Monkey. Its clash is with the Dog, opposite it in the circle: vision meeting vigilance. The Rabbit is its harm, and the Dragon is one of the four signs the tradition says punishes itself — read as being one's own harshest critic. None of this settles how two people get on.
