Mercury retrograde is the stretch of about three weeks, three or four times a year, when Mercury appears to stop, drift backwards through the zodiac and stop again before it moves on. In 2026 the last one runs from October 24 to November 13, entirely in Scorpio; in 2027 there are three, in February, in June and in October. The table below lists every period of 2026 and 2027 to the minute, with the shadow weeks around each one, and shows the times in your own time zone once the page has loaded.

Below the table, each period still to come is read the way the astrological tradition reads it: the sign Mercury turns in, what that sign colors, and the part of the chart it crosses for each of the twelve Sun signs. This is a way of noticing the rhythm of a season, offered for reflection and entertainment rather than prediction. Nothing here decides what happens to you, and nothing here is advice about a decision.

What Mercury retrograde is

Nothing in the sky actually reverses. Mercury travels on a small, fast orbit close to the Sun, and three or four times a year it passes between the Sun and the Earth. Seen from here, it seems to slow down, stand still — the station — and slide backwards against the stars for about three weeks, then stand still again and resume its usual direction. The two stations are the dates in each row of the table, with the degree of the zodiac where Mercury turned.

In the tradition, Mercury rules messages, contracts, travel, trade, technology and the thinking that connects them. Its retrograde weeks are read as a season for the prefix «re»: reviewing, rereading, revising, reconnecting, returning to something left unfinished. They are the best known of all the retrogrades because they come so often and because the things Mercury governs are the things every day is made of — a message sent to the wrong person, a train missed, a file that would not save. The tradition does not say these things happen only now; it says these are the weeks to notice them, and to leave a little room in your plans.

The shadow before and after

Every Mercury retrograde has a shadow on each side of it, and the table gives both. The shadow begins when Mercury, still moving forwards, first reaches the degree where it will later turn direct; it ends when Mercury, moving forwards again, passes the degree where it turned retrograde. In between, Mercury crosses the same stretch of the zodiac three times.

The tradition reads the first shadow as the retrograde's approach — the weeks when the themes it will review begin to surface — and the second as its wake, when what was reconsidered settles into a decision. So the 2026 retrograde in Scorpio, which turns on October 24, has a shadow from October 4, and its wake lasts until November 30.

Mercury retrograde in Scorpio: October 24 – November 13, 2026

The last retrograde of 2026 turns at 21° Scorpio on October 24 and turns direct at 5° Scorpio on November 13, without leaving the sign. Scorpio is the sign of what lies under the surface: trust, intimacy, shared money and debts, secrets and the things people do not say. The tradition reads Mercury retrograde here as a season for conversations that go deeper the second time, for rereading what was signed or promised, and for noticing what has been left unsaid. It begins two days before the full moon of October 26 and spans Samhain and Halloween, the old festival of the thinning year — a fitting backdrop for a review of what is ending.

Aries: the retrograde crosses your eighth house, the part of the chart the tradition gives to shared resources, debts, taxes and intimacy. A season to go back over joint finances and agreements, and to return to a conversation about trust that was cut short.

Taurus: it crosses your seventh house, partnerships of every kind. The tradition reads these weeks as a time when an old misunderstanding with a partner — in love or in business — asks to be talked through again, more slowly this time.

Gemini: it falls in your sixth house, daily work, routine and health. A season to revise how the working day is organised, to finish the task that keeps slipping, and to pay attention to what the body has been saying.

Cancer: it crosses your fifth house, romance, creativity, children and play. An old flame, an abandoned creative project or a hobby you set aside may come back into view; the tradition reads it as a chance to see whether it still brings you joy.

Leo: it falls in your fourth house, home, family and roots. A season for family conversations that have waited, for repairs around the house, and for revisiting what home means to you now.

Virgo: it crosses your third house, the one Mercury knows best — messages, siblings, neighbours, short journeys and study. Reread before you send, and return to a conversation that ended halfway.

Libra: it falls in your second house, money, possessions and what you value. A season to go back over a budget, a price you agreed or a purchase you are unsure of, and to ask what you are really paying for.

Scorpio: the retrograde is in your own sign, crossing your first house — how you present yourself and how you are seen. The tradition reads it as a personal review: rethinking a plan you announced, revising how you introduce yourself, letting a first impression be corrected.

Sagittarius: it falls in your twelfth house, rest, retreat and what happens behind the scenes. A quiet season in the tradition's reading — for sleep, reflection, finishing things privately before your own birthday season begins.

Capricorn: it crosses your eleventh house, friends, groups and plans for the future. An old friend may get back in touch; a shared project or a long-term plan asks to be looked at again before it moves forward.

Aquarius: it falls in your tenth house, career and public life. A season to revisit a professional goal, a stalled negotiation or a conversation with someone above you, and to check the details before the work goes public.

Pisces: it crosses your ninth house, study, long journeys, publishing and beliefs. Travel plans may need a second look; a course or a piece of writing you left unfinished asks to be picked up again.

Mercury retrograde in Pisces and Aquarius: February 9 – March 3, 2027

The first retrograde of 2027 turns at 6° Pisces on February 9 and slips back into Aquarius before it turns direct at 21° Aquarius on March 3; the shadow runs from January 25 to March 23. It follows the annular solar eclipse of February 6, the same day the Chinese Year of the Fire Goat begins. Pisces is the sign of imagination, compassion and the things that blur; Aquarius the sign of friends, groups and ideas about the future. The tradition reads the passage as a review that starts in dreams and intuitions and ends among plans and the people you make them with.

Mercury retrograde in Cancer and Gemini: June 10 – July 4, 2027

The summer retrograde turns at 6° Cancer on June 10 and slips back into Gemini, turning direct at 27° Gemini on July 4; the shadow runs from May 26 to July 19. Cancer is the sign of home, family and memory; Gemini, one of the two signs Mercury rules, is the sign of words, neighbours, siblings and everyday movement. The tradition reads this one as a season of family conversations and of returning to the people and places that are close by.

The last retrograde of 2027 turns at 5° Scorpio on October 7 and slips back into Libra, turning direct at 19° Libra on October 28; the shadow runs from September 17 to November 13. It returns to the stretch of the zodiac the 2026 retrograde ended in, which the tradition reads as an echo: what was reconsidered a year earlier comes back to be finished. Libra is the sign of partnership, fairness and balance, so the review moves from what lies under the surface to the agreements between people.

The earlier retrogrades of 2026

The first two Mercury retrogrades of 2026 ran from February 26 to March 20 in Pisces — a review in the sign of dreams and endings at the close of the zodiac's year — and from June 29 to July 23 in Cancer, the sign of home and family. Their exact stations and shadows are in the table above, for anyone looking back over the year or checking a date.

Living with the three weeks

The tradition's suggestions for a Mercury retrograde are modest and practical: reread a message before you send it, keep a copy of anything important, leave a margin of time around travel, and use the weeks for what the prefix «re» describes — revising a draft, repairing a connection, returning to a plan that stalled. Many people who follow astrology prefer to finish things during these weeks rather than start them. Others ignore the retrograde entirely, and that is a reasonable reading too.

What the tradition does not say is that something will go wrong. A retrograde is a reminder to slow down and look again, not a sentence on the weeks it covers. If a decision is in front of you, the decision is yours, made on its merits and the facts in front of you; the sky is a way of reflecting on it, never the reason for it.

Reading a retrograde in Vanteia

The Sun-sign notes above are the broad strokes. In the Vanteia app, a transit reading places Mercury in your own birth chart — computed from your date, time and place of birth — so you can see which part of your chart this retrograde actually crosses, and ask about it in your own words. A tarot reading is another way in: ask the cards what is worth returning to before Mercury turns direct.

Every reading is an AI reading in your language, for reflection and entertainment. The dates on this page come from the same astronomical ephemeris the app uses to draw its charts.
